T-RDLDoc Instructions

T-RDLDoc reads SQL Reporting Services 2005 RDL files and extracts key metadata from these RDLs.   The RDL Files can be located on disk or on a Report Server.  The metadata is extracted and stored in stored in XML Format.  The metadata can then be output in 3 different formats:

1. XML - Metadata from the reports that were processed
2. RDL -  Local report based on the XML metadata.
3. XSL - XML file output according to an XSL format file.

To Get Started

For RDL Files on disk

1. Select the File System Folder  that contains the RDL files. 

or

For RDL Files stored in the Report Server

a. Specify the report server URL in the format of http:://servername/reportserver
b. If you are using Windows authentication to connect to the server leave this box checked. If not, uncheck the windows authentication box and enter the user, password and domain (optional) you use to connect to the report server.
c. Click the connect button.
d. Select the Report Folder that contains the reports you want to document or leave it as / for the top level folder.


2. Check the recursive box if you RDL files are also stored in subfolders
3. Select the "Process Reports" Tab.  Remove any RDL files you don't want to process and then click on the "Process" button.
4. Select the "Generate Output" Tab. 

To Output Documentation as a Report

Select  RDL as type.  Click on the desired output template and click "Generate".  The local Report Viewer will open in a new window. 

or

To Output Documentation  as an XML File

Select XML as type and select the destination filename.   Then click "Generate".  Report metadata will be output to the XML file you specified.

or

To Output Documentation to a file formatted according to an XSL File

Select XSL and select the destination filename.  Click on the desired output template and click "Generate". 


To Customize Documentation

The product ships with several templates for items RDL and XSL output.   You can create additional templates by copying and modifying these files.  You must save your files as T-RDLDoc_xxxx.rdl or T-RDLDoc_xxxx.xsl where xxxx is the unique name you want to assign to the template and they must be saved in the output formats folder.
