Creating Drafts
To create a new draft, choose "New Draft" from the File menu. Type the text for your draft in the appropriate fields:
- Title: The top-most text box in the draft window. This will be the title of your draft.
- Main editing area: The main body of your draft.
- Extended: This is also known as the continuation field and is only supported by some blog systems, in particular blog systems that implement the MovableType Publishing Interface (for example, MovableType, TypePad, WordPress). Typically, extended fields contain the rest of your draft, but will not be visible in your blog index file, only in the static link to the published draft.
- Summary: This is also known as the "excerpt" field. This will contain a summary of your draft, which is usally used for RSS feeds or archive listings.
Revisions
ecto stores a copy of all versions of your draft. So, if you save a draft, a copy of the previous contents is kept. If you accidentally cleared text and undo is not available, you can choose an earlier revision via the "Restore Revision" command from the File menu.
Draft window footer
The footer of the draft window provides toggles to override defaults. From left to right:
- Comments: Allow or disallow readers to post comments to the new draft once it is published.
- Trackbacks: Allow or disallow trackbacks to be sent to the draft.
- Status: Set to "publish" or "draft". Note that "draft" means posting the draft to your blog server, but not publishing it on your website.
Categories
If your blog system supports categories, you can set the categories for your blog using the corresponding list in the side bar. Checked items will be the draft's categories. If you have more than one selected category, you can set a given one as the primary category, although this not supported by all blog systems.
Tags
ecto also supports tags as described on the Technorati website. This gives you an easy way to categorize your drafts with any tag you choose and have that grouped on Technorati with all other blog drafts tagged alike.
Toolbar
- Create Summary: This creates an excerpt of your draft's contents and inserts it into the Summary field (only available if your blog system supports summaries).
- Adjust Time: Change the publish date of your draft. Note that this is not the same as scheduled publishing.
- Trackback: Enter trackback addresses of blog posts you want to send pings to. For an explanation of trackback see the MovableType manual.
- Word Count: Show text statistics for your draft.
